Package

The standard 52 card pack is used.

Game Purpose

The goal of each player is to win the pot, which includes all bets that players have made in any given deal. A player bets in the hope of having the best hand, or to give the impression that they do. In most versions of Poker, the best combination of five cards is the best hand.

Deal

The dealer gives each player three cards, one at a time, face down. Two cards are then placed face down in front of the dealer, who does not receive a hand of three cards.

Game

Players do not play against the dealer. Their aim is to get a good poker hand by using only their three cards and at the same time the dealer’s two face cards. At no time can a player show his hand to other players.

After seeing three hole cards, the player can ask for his initial bet back or “let it go”. One of the dealer’s hole cards is revealed. The player can then ask for their bet back or “let it go” again. The dealer’s second face-down card is now opened and the players reveal their cards. The dealer then pays out all winning hands.

Poker Hands

Fives – This is the highest possible hand and can only occur if at least one card is wild, such as a joker. Examples of five of a kind could be four 10s and one wild card or two queens and three wild cards.

Straight Flush – This is the highest hand possible when only the standard pack is used and there are no wild cards. A straight flush consists of five cards from the same suit, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6 respectively.

Four of a kind – This is the next highest hand. An example is four aces or four 3s.

Full House – This coloured hand consists of three cards of three ranks and two cards of another rank, such as three 8s and two 4s.

Flush – Five cards in the same suit, but not all in the same order as the same flush. As an example we have Q, 10, 7, 6 and 2 clubs.

Straight – Five cards in rank, but not all of the same suit are straight. An example is 9♥, 8♣, 7♠, 6♦, 5♥.

Triple – This combination is three cards of the same value, while the other two cards have a different order, such as three jacks, seven and four each.

Two Pairs – This hand contains a pair with a value such as Q, Q, 7, 7, 4 and a pair with a different value, plus a fifth value.

One Pair – This frequently used combination contains a pair with the other three cards in a different order. An example is 10, 10, K, 4, 3.

No pair – This very common hand contains “nothing”. None of the five cards are of the same colour, or all five cards in the same suit are identical to each other. When more than one player has no pair, the hands are ranked by the highest card each hand contains, so that an ace-high hand discards an ace-high hand, a king-high hand discards a king-high hand, etc.
